Notes from the Archivist

"Archivist"

When we started Archival a year ago, we anticipated every release being a one time thing. We aren’t locked into vineyard contracts or trying to build a continuum of releases spanning decades. But when we have a chance to work with someone like Caldwell, you better believe we seize it. And if you thought last year’s Smuggler’s was good…well, this blows it away.

Last year’s Caldwell release was a blockbuster. 95 points, described as “unabashedly bold—power-packed and robust, with penetrating layers”. And this one, while it carries no score yet, is even better.

JFC, aka John “Fucking” Caldwell has a larger than life reputation in Napa. And his wines reflect that, known for being huge and hulking, with enormous depth and power. Hauntingly deep, dark, and brooding – they’re huge hits with collectors and connoisseurs for good reason.

They also come with a price.

$100-$150 is the standard going rate for just about any bottle with the famed vineyard name on it.

While most of our wines have been, and will be preserved under a layer of secrecy in some ways, this comes with no redaction.

The kimono is wide open, and we’ve been busting at the seams to get this one out there.

Notes from Bobby:

About 45 minutes is what it took. A few questions and prodding…” Oh, taste this…do you understand what I am tasting and where I am trying to go?”…”Ah, yes. Let me be right back. There might be one barrel that can get you there.” That’s how it goes with this friend and winemaker Marc Gagnon. And man, OH BOY, did we get there! I am not going to wax poetic about this wine. It needs no introduction. And, yes, we may have eclipsed the first collaboration on this second time around the sun.  Last year, actually getting to work together, was more of a learning lesson for me–understanding his estate, his palate, and the signature treasures that he cellars. Now, in this bottle, we have honed in on which parts of his caved treasures best suit Archival. The blocks that lend to our style, the percentages of the grapes that seem to fit. Sitting down with him back in May, getting to taste through his wares was a delicious joy. He has opened the door of his home to me, and I’m not there as a judge or curator to his vintage. I am there to knit together the raw product that he has steered my way. Just know, I am very proud of what is in this bottle. Buy as much as you can and share liberally.
