There aren’t many unknown gems left to uncover in Napa. An occasional hot upstart, or a boutique negociant run by two fiendishly good looking dudes pops up here and there. But most everything has been conquered, claimed, and subsequently pimped out. But the bleeding edge of cooler-than-cultdom, hip-to-know smalltime producers, this place is IT. They are 100% DTC. No distribution. No restaurants. No stores. Almost all word of mouth and referrals. I only heard of them because my friend who started a touring service out here told me about them many years ago. They don’t seek out fame and fortune, but rather a quiet existence as a family in the hills of the valley. With a die hard fanbase, every year they sell out. Their wines push the bounds of opulence and purity. They would be near the top of my short list for collaborations, but for now, they’ll remain wines you “acquire” directly. And I mean that in the most generous way; the scarcity here is a function of the property size, the low yields, and the commitment to quality. The prices, however, are not obscene. Topping out around $125 for the Cabernet Sauvignon, they don’t push the boundaries of pricing, which is always nice. While we all love that curvy, swervy Napa Cab, this needed just a little something extra. So the final blend contains 89% Cab from our source, with 6% Calistoga Petit Verdot from the same source, and 5% Coombsville Malbec from a lone barrel we found. The PV gives it just enough backbone and paves an extra lane in the black fruit spectrum. The Malbec rounds out the mid palate with its plummy freshness and gives it a bit of a bright lift. Together, they form an utterly drinkable, perfectly crushable, made-to-impress Cabernet. This has a full body, big ripe fruit at its core, and it’s packing a massive sweet core of black and purple fruit, heady spices and savory character. Loads of cherry vanilla, black plum compote, clove, and sweet, toasty oak dominate upon popping. For a young wine, it’s incredibly drinkable; in fact, this might be the single most drinkable release yet. It still tastes like a barrel sample, to be honest. If you remember Odyssey and Ronin, imagine combining the two and you get something like “Obsidian”. It is, to put it politely…promiscuous. Not shy. Very giving. Often after bottling, the wines are banged up, closed for business, or otherwise recovering, but not this. To be honest, this might be my favorite Cab that I’ve had from us – at least right upon opening. If you want to drink your Cab young, or young-ish – this would be a TOP pick. This is easily, EASILY on par with the $125 sibling and, with our refinement, probably holds it down against anything.
